We’re not a big fan of “losing weight quickly” because it so often leads to a quick loss of weight, followed by a quick regaining of that weight. Instead, we’d like to suggest you take a year of your life. Just one year, which in the grand scheme of things is not very long at all, and lose weight slowly through proper nutrition, exercise and understanding your body. If you can make a lifestyle change over the course of one year that allows you to live a healthier, more energetic life for the next 25 years, then that’s a small sacrifice to make when you think about it.
One thing that often gets thrown around in conversation is, “How many pounds are you trying to lose?” Whether it’s 10 pounds or 40-pounds, a good question to ask yourself is, “How did I come up with this number?” Body composition and makeup varies so heavily from one body type to another that losing weight isn’t always the best answer. Sometimes the weight you think you need to lose is false weight. It could just be bloating in the abdominal areas and not really body weight that you need to lose. Even if you do need to lose 40 pounds of real body weight, we’d rather see you monitor your results on how you look and feel, how your clothes fit, how alert you are throughout the day, how productive you have been or how you are sleeping.
Losing weight can be about cutting calories, but even then it’s more about the type of calories that you’re taking in, rather than how many calories in total you are consuming. Other things to consider are the kinds of protein and carbohydrates you’re taking in, the time of day you’re eating. Your body is just that, YOURS. Finding a diet and fitness program that works for you is about understanding how your body operates. In the end, though, it will always come down to nutrition, exercise and understanding your body. If you can do those three things, then you’re on your way to a permanent lifestyle change that will give you more energy, better health and a longer life.
